I have always had a passion for teaching and training. My professional career began after graduating from Oxford University as a secondary teacher of English and drama. Teaching took me from the UK to Hungary and then to Prague, where I worked in various schools with students of all ages, teaching English language and literature, EFL, business English and drama, before returning to the UK in 2011 to manage English language courses across Europe for a UK company.
More recently, I have worked in Business Development for a UK group of conference centres. In amongst this, I have done various other jobs, including proof reading, travel writing, as an overseas holiday rep, tour guide and artist. I have lived in six different countries and in each place I have discovered fascinating people and fresh perspectives.
I’m very grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had in life so far and am very thankful that, on this earth, we have also been blessed with sunshine, pistachio ice cream, labradors and coffee. At least one of those usually features in the moments when I am not working!
I have always been interested in helping others discover their potential, right from when I left St Andrews University and saw others launching into the deep without a clear understanding of themselves and what direction they were going in. I did consider going into ‘Careers’ even at that point but felt I needed more experience myself, so ended up in Japan on the JET Programme for two years, teaching English.
On returning to the UK I worked for VisitScotland (London office) and ended up managing the centre, including staff, budget and marketing. Some years later and after a second stint living in Japan training new teachers and helping them cope with culture shock, I completed a Postgraduate diploma in Careers guidance and Development from Edinburgh Napier University and then started working in the careers centre at the University of East Anglia.
I have recently completed a post-graduate degree in leadership and management with the Institute of Leadership and Management, as this area is another interest. In another life I would have loved to have been a football manager!
